Tax Audit Report Due Date Extended to 21 October 2026: What Changed and Who Benefits?
Big relief for taxpayers covered under tax audit provisions — the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the tax audit report deadline for Assessment Year 2026-27. If you’ve been tracking this news, here’s everything you need to know, in plain language.
This update is brought to you by Startup Portal business services, with insights from our compliance experts Nikhil Rajarshi and Govind S. Jethani, who bring 8+ years of experience helping business owners stay on top of exactly this kind of compliance deadline — including ITR E-Filing in Pune and across India.
What Exactly Changed? The Two Dates at a Glance
Through a press release dated 28 September 2026, the CBDT announced two linked extensions for Assessment Year 2026-27:
Both deadlines moved by 21 days, and this wasn’t two separate decisions — the two extensions came as a matched pair, which brings us to the next important point: why one date can’t move without the other.
Why the Audit Report Date Moved Along With the ITR Date?
Here’s the mechanic that a lot of people miss: under Section 44AB of the Income-tax Act, the “specified date” for furnishing a tax audit report is statutorily tied to fall exactly one month before the due date for furnishing the return under Section 139(1).
So when CBDT extended the ITR due date for audit cases to 21 November 2026, the audit report deadline automatically moved along with it, to 21 October 2026. This isn’t a separate concession tax professionals lobbied for independently — it’s a direct consequence of how the law links the two dates together.
Who Exactly Is Covered by This Extension?
This extension applies specifically to persons referred to at S. No. 2 in the Table below Explanation 2 to Section 139(1) of the Income-tax Act, 1961 — in simpler terms, taxpayers whose accounts are required to undergo a tax audit.
It covers:
- ITR-3, ITR-5, and ITR-7 filers with mandatory audit requirements
- ITR-6 filers (companies)
Who this does NOT cover: regular salaried individuals and other taxpayers not subject to tax audit requirements. If you’re a salaried employee filing a simple return, this announcement doesn’t change anything for you — your deadline stays where it was.
What's NOT Extended? Don't Assume Blanket Relief
It’s easy to assume every tax deadline just moved, but that’s not the case. Here’s what remains unchanged:
- Non-audit business and professional ITR deadline — still 31 August 2026
- Transfer pricing cases — remain on their own separate schedule, with the specified date at 31 October and ITR due 30 November
- Company secretarial filings — AOC-4, MGT-7, and AGM due dates are completely unaffected by this notification and follow their own existing timelines
If you’re not sure which category your filing falls under, it’s worth double-checking before you assume you have extra time.
Don't Treat 21 November as "More Time to Start the Audit":
This is the part that catches people out every year. The 21 November date is for the ITR, not the audit report. Your tax audit report still has to be furnished by 21 October 2026 — the extra month doesn’t apply to the audit itself.
On interest: Section 234A interest applies only if you file after the (now extended) due date, so there’s genuine relief there. But advance tax interest under Sections 234B and 234C continues to apply exactly as before — this extension doesn’t touch that calculation at all.
Practical advice: use these extra 21 days to actually finish your book closures, GST-ITR reconciliations, and TDS/TCS matching — not to push the audit further down your to-do list. The breathing room is meant to help you finish properly, not to delay starting.
Why This Extension Happened?
This wasn’t a surprise out of nowhere. In the days leading up to the original 30 September deadline, several Chartered Accountant associations and tax practitioner bodies had formally represented to the CBDT, requesting an extension — some specifically asking for the audit date to be pushed to 31 October.
This also isn’t unprecedented. Similar extensions have happened in past assessment years — for instance, for AY 2022-23, the audit-report date was pushed from 30 September to 7 October. The pattern of CBDT granting relief close to the original deadline has repeated often enough that tax professionals have come to half-expect it — but it’s still wise to plan your compliance work as though an extension might not come in any given year, rather than banking on one.

Here’s a consolidated reference for the current filing season:
What Taxpayers and Businesses Should Do Right Now?
A quick action checklist:
- Confirm your category — check whether your accounts actually fall under the audited category covered by this extension
- Finalize your books and complete any pending reconciliations without delay
- Get your UDIN and auditor sign-off done well before 21 October — don’t wait until the last date just because it moved
- Coordinate with your CA or auditor early. Since this extension applies industry-wide, everyone’s deadline moves together — which often means a last-minute rush across the board as the new date approaches. Getting your documentation ready early helps you avoid being caught in that crunch.
Conclusion:
To sum it up: for taxpayers subject to tax audit under AY 2026-27, the audit report is now due by 21 October 2026, and the corresponding ITR by 21 November 2026. Everyone else — salaried individuals, non-audit businesses, and company secretarial filings — continues on their original schedule.
